"Seeing so many people gathered together around shared interests inspires me at every APA convention I've come to!"
-- Suzi Marie Clark, Clarion University
"A thought that inspired me was that we need to have more detailed research as far as looking at each population and comorbidity, in order to treat them better."
-- Dorothy Reinagel, Alliant International University
"I attended the William James Award ceremony, and the awardee gave an address on happiness. One of his findings was that those who were conservative and married -- that is, Republicans -- are very happy compared to independents and Democrats. And people who practice religion more were also happier."
-- Innocent Okori, Seton Hall University
"Though more work is needed, I have noticed that this year's presentations seemed more inclusive of multicultural and diversity topics and issues. I consider such information integral to my training as a psychologist, and such work enables growth to occur within the field of psychology."
-- Elvia Lorena Navarro, New Mexico State University
"You know, something that was very useful was a movement to create better integration between clinical practice and research ... how it can be effective to have clinicians inform research, so that, in turn, research outcomes can inform clinical practice."
-- Moises Baron, PhD, University of San Diego.
"I just came out of the talk about African American women. It's inspired me to keep in mind at all times that there are women of color out there -- and all women -- who are traumatized on a regular basis through racism and discrimination."
-- Christine C. Iijima Hall, PhD, Maricopa Community Colleges
"SAMHSA has a very aggressive goal to defeat homelessness. They're looking at both the macro -- the economy, city policies -- but also the micro, like individuals' responses to the things around them."
-- Drake Austin Walker, Community College of Denver
"[I learned that] the therapist shouldn’t be afraid to ask, if a patient is of a different culture than he or she is, if they are comfortable with that."
-- Ebi D. Okara, EdD, Randolph, Mass.
"Dr. Joseph Trimble said that when we're working with clients, we have to think about the concept of trust, and the differences in how the psychologist defines it, and how the client defines it. You can't assume that you both think about trust in the same way when you work cross-culturally ... It's something I want to teach my classes."
-- Anabel Bejarano, PhD, Alliant International University
This was my second time to attend APA annual converntion but the first time to present at APA. Since I presented it on Thursday morning in a pretty comfortable way,I felt I had plenty of time to enjoy listening to others and going with the flow. I also had my 46th birthday during the convention! This said, next time I will definitely spend at least half a day looking through the program book to have a better planning!
